If you are in Rome between February 28th and March 5th, you cannot miss the carnival celebration – Carnavale Romano —. Do know how it is celebrated and who are its most celebrated characters?
Traditionally the carnival celebration begins with a parade by Via del Corso. The parade is formed by horse carriages and people dressed in the traditional folk masks of characters such as Meo Pettaca – a typical character from Trastevere – ; Rugantino —protagonist of one of the most famous roman love stories and Cassandrino – a charismatic head of household—.
This is just the beginning of a series of days of parades, music, theatrical performances and of course… food! In Rome it is traditional to prepare and eat sweets such as: the frappas – some sweets in the form of a strip or knotted as a ribbon – and the castagnolas – fried balls covered with icing sugar and cinnamon. Both are perfect to be eaten with your favourite coffee or chocolate.
The last day of the celebration is known as martedi grasso, precedent of the Ash Wednesday that begins Lent (forty days before Easter).
