In front of the apse of the basilica Santa Maria la Maggiore stands the Esquiline Obelisk, a Roman construction over 14m high, reaching to 25.53m with the pedestal and cross. It was built by Diocletian and placed beside its twin obelisk from Piazza del Quirinale at the entrance to the Mausoleum of Augustus. It was rediscovered in 1527 and erected in its current location in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V who commissioned the work to Domenico Fontana. Source: turismoroma.it
